What rocket science, environmental results, and 38 Special have in common

Rocket science is a cliché example of complexity for a reason

This is a part of an image from one of my favorite books of all time, Thing Explainer, by Randall Monroe. You can purchase the book here, and see more of his work here: https://xkcd.com/

Conservation and environmental change efforts are extraordinarily complex

Not-accurate representation of the complexity of developing a successful tree planting program from my AEA presentation. Even though it’s not accurate/scientific, and you can see where I just deleted the slide title in the blank spot at the top, it’s still © GeoLiteracy, LLC 2021 :)

While complex, conservation requires less precision

The reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone National Park shows how we can fail and succeed without fully understanding the complexity of a system. (8)

Thomas Moran The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Moran’s participation in a government expedition to the area and his subsequent painting provided a majestic argument for declaring the area a national park. Moran included a Native American hunter in the painting, but the creation of the park led to more U.S. Army battles with the original people inhabiting this land. All Native American groups were forced out of the park boundaries. More on Moran’s most famous painting.

So hold on loosely! And don’t let go… (15)
